-Rolling Stone

"On their seventh album, Switchfoot set the mood with U2-esque shimmer ("Needle and Haystack Life"), fuzzed out rockers that would make Dave Grohl green with envy... "
-Alternative Press

BREAKING: SWITCHFOOT TV (PODCAST) EPISODE 41

The Return of Switchfoot TV [EPISODE 41] - Basketball, f/ Sara Watkins, and more!

"The Best Yet: Live in Nashville" Review: DVD offers solid Switchfoot concert retrospective

Just like the Sony-released album of the same name, "The Best Yet Live" DVD gives listeners/viewers an ample look into the past few years of Switchfoot music. "The Best Yet Live" is a well-produced video collection compiled during the band's Nashville stop during the co-headlined Music Builds Tour back in 2008. The tracklisting is safe and casual-fan-friendly, featuring four hits from the 2003 double-platinum "The Beautiful Letdown" -- something to be expected, considering how little an amount oftime the band had to squeeze these tunes into (a little over an hour).

The DVD is solid; the audio mixing is significantly improved over the previous, under-produced "Live at the Ventura Theatre." There is actually a strong bass presence in the overall mix, the sound is more consistent and is more pleasing to the ear overall. The video editing is highly improved as well, with black-and-white effects and slow-motion sequences, lending a music-video styled, professional-feeling sheen over top of the whole film.

The quality isn't perfect however, by any means. There were some very obviously pixelated boom camera/aerial shots of the stage and band; one will notice it immediately. Whether intentional or just the sad result of a low-quality camera, the end result is a very distracting and frustrating viewing experience at times.

There was also an example of a possible glitch (the same kind that plagued "Ventura"), when after "This Is Home," a strange sliding effect that sounded like the beginning "riff" of "Clumsy" by Fergie emerged in the mix. I'm pretty sure that wasn't in the original concert audio… whoops.

Another unfortunate editing problem, albeit unfix-able, can be found in "Gone." The Beyonce intro and interludes were edited out, probably due to copyright issues, leaving a rather awkward-sounding "whatever" where "this could be Rihanna's umbrella, ella, ella, whateva" should've been.

But problems aside, how could one forget "Dirty Second Hands." Arguably one of Switchfoot's most intense performances on this DVD, the cymbal bashing interlude, captured on DVD for the first time, is pure gold.

With the big Music Builds set up, including giant LCD screens and strobe lights galore, this DVD is the most visually appealing from Switchfoot yet. Lame, lifeless crowd aside, this DVD was worth every penny.

FootColumn: A Call to Arms from Bleah

Editor's Note: This is a FootColumn/message from Bleah, one of our resident writers. Take some time to read this; her dedication and passion to share and spread the music of Switchfoot is inspiring to me as a fellow fan. I am encouraged as I read this. But conversation can't be one-sided; comment below if you read this! Let's encourage each other, Footsoldiers! Let's do this! So without further ado, here's Bleah.

-----

Well this is pretty much my attempt towards some sort of pep talk.

Now I will admit that I have not always been the best at, or faithful in, my advertising of Switchfoot. I'm not proud of it, but I haven't always been very good at it. Sure whenever Job would tell us to, I would go and request the songs a few times, but then I probably wouldn't touch it again for a week or so until he asked us to again. But in the last month or so I have had more time on my hands thanks to the holidays and so I've been doing a little more...I don't know what the correct word would be other then advertising, as I said before. I have been requesting "Mess Of Me" and I put a couple of the "Hello Hurricane" and Switchfoot banners up on my own personal blog.

So a couple weeks ago, I got some major feedback thanks to the banners. People putting them up on their own sites, people saying they would help out in requesting the band and this new album (which is amazing by the way. I finally got my own copy). But I also got people who had either never heard of Switchfoot or had heard of them but just never got into the music, never got far enough to become as obsessed and attached as some of us have become. So I have kinda gotten on this roll per say. I LOVE telling as many people as possible about the band, and the album. I've got it posted on my blog all the time, spreading the music around, giving my friends copies of the album, listening to it all the time, especially when I am around people. I even have Switchfoot information on my e-mail signature.

There are simple and easy things you can do to help promote this band. Things that aren't going to stop your day, cramp your style, or slow you down. And really, when you think about it, who are we as fans if we can't even go the extra mile to make sure this band gets what they need to succeed? We are their lifeline in a sense. What we do for them, to promote them, to in essence, support them, is what will bring them further. They can produce and release music all day long. They can go on tours all over the world 24/7, but without fans to bring friends to concerts, to buy and share CD's, and without our help as the supposedly loyal followers of the foot, then its no good and useless. I'm not trying to make you feel bad, I'm surley not trying to guilt trip you in any way. I'm simply telling you what I feel is true. I would be ashamed to call myself a fan and know that the very band I supposedly was a fan of went under because I wouldn't step up to plate.

Now I'm not saying that the band will go south, will not succeed. What I'm saying is if we want them to keep topping charts, doing amazing, being as successful as they deserve to be, then we have to get, and keep, the ball rolling. And the bigger the ball gets the more people we will need to support it.

Okay, as I slowly step off my soap box I just want to encourage you one more time to go to your local radio stations, go to the main radio stations and request; respectfully text, e-mail, call on the phone. If I'm correct, we're mainly focusing on the Alternative and Active Rock type radio stations. But whatever you can do, I'm sure would be appreciated. Take the banner we have at the top of the page. Put it on your myspace, facebook, twitter, blogs. Whatever. Print it out and stick it on your binder for school. Whatever you have to do to make sure it gets seen. Paste it to your signature on your e-mail. Just do everything you can to get this out there.

They need us, and I don't know about you but I personally need them. Their music has added so much to my life. And I don't know where I would be without this band. I know overly dramatic, whatever. But I mean it. I love Switchfoot and all the guys who put it together and make it possible.

I'm ready to make up for lost time and be the fan I was meant to be. But I can't do this alone. We need your help. They need your help.

IMPORTANT NEWS: (Re-)introducing the Footsoldiers!

Greetings friends!

I know it's something that's been said a lot by the Switchfoot guys and repeated by many of us followers, but it really is true: Music is a journey. When you think of a journey, you probably picture an open road, an RV or perhaps a smaller car, or maybe a knapsack filled with your life's belongings. But the common denominator is usually always this: that journey is filled with friends and people.

Switchfoot's music has changed my life, and I'm sure it has affected many of yours as well. At some point, each of us decided to call this band our own and join them as they explored "God, girls, and mathematics" and the reason for our existence on "this darkwater planet, spinning in a race where no one wins, and and no one's one." Along the way, they have poured out their souls into the sounds that we hear from the iPod speaker or the car stereo… inspired by the people who listen and grasp their songs, going out to shows every night, and singing along - the co-conspirators.

We are a half of the equation, my friends. Why not give back to the band we know and love so much?

So, to start off 2010, my good friend Jeanna from Landofbrokenhearts.org and I have the pleasure and complete honor to announce that Footsoldiers is being relaunched for the brand new year!

Footsoldiers was a concept born out of the idea of giving back to Switchfoot in a tangible, creative way. Footsoldiers is about a movement; about infecting the world with the message of hope and love that Switchfoot has always shared. It's bigger than us, it's bigger than the band, this idea called "Love" is. John Perkins did indeed say it right… "Love is the final fight."

So what is/are Footsoldiers?

YOU and I are the Footsoldiers. We are the ones carrying out the warfare on the internet and television and radio. We are the ones spreading the news and word about Switchfoot to anyone and everyone who will listen with open ears. We are the mouthpieces of the band to those who haven't ever heard Switchfoot's music.

At the same time, Footsoldiers is an organization that we hope will become a well-oiled machine. It will be a repository for ideas, campaigns, and strategies. It won't be run by any one person, but the life and success of this will depend directly on our community and our creativity and passion to promote Switchfoot to the masses. Consider Footsoldiers the companion brigade to Atlantic's Street Propaganda – we will work hand-in-hand.

We're going to need all of your help to get this started… so are you ready to engage the world? Let's do this!

The inaugural mission for 2010 is easy and fun, and there are prizes. You can find it here:

- Jeanna (LOBH)
