NEW YORK, NY, August 29, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jon Foreman and Chad Butler of Switchfoot stopped by Q104.3 to chat with Jonathan Clarke about their show next Saturday night at Revelation Generation (RevGen), NJ's much anticipated mega concert (http://www.revgen.org).

"We're excited about headlining at RevGen next weekend. It will give us a chance to play some of the songs from our new album," says Jon Foreman, lead singer of Switchfoot. Their 7th album, Hello Hurricane, debuts in November.

"We've talked to other bands that will be at RevGen and we're really looking forward to it, especially since it's our first time playing there," says Chad Butler, drummer.

The Out of the Box Show hosted by Clarke will air this Sunday, August 30, from 9:00 to 10:00 pm on Q104.3, streaming on www.Q1043.com.

Switchfoot takes the lead on the New York Stage next Saturday night at RevGen. More than 50 bands will play on five stages beginning Friday September 4 through Saturday, September 5. Each stage has its own style and the biggest recording artists that made the genre great.

In its fifth year, Revelation Generation is the premier annual concert in NJ. Drawing fans from the greater New York/Philadelphia area, RevGen brings a world-class entertainment experience to Central New Jersey. The unique non-profit event takes place in Frenchtown, NJ at Revelation Farms, a sprawling 140-plus acre property owned by festival founders, Robert and Kim Grom. Revelation Generation creates a unique mix of emerging and award-winning musical artists spanning rock, pop, alternative, acoustic, urban and punk, and up and coming bands, along with inspiring speakers, demonstrations, activities, and games in an alcohol-free and drug-free venue that everyone can enjoy. Last year, RevGen welcomed more than 25,000 fans -- a figure we expect to eclipse this year.

Switchfoot's Music to feature on ESPN in September

First off, "Mess of Me" has hit Chicago's WIIL-FM. The first play we've tracked was on August 27, 2009, at 2:13 AM. Thanks to our friend Josh.

We'll keep you posted when more stations start playing the song. I do think it will be September before we start seeing any significant action at radio.

Also, Switchfoot's booking agency, William Morris, has updated Switchfoot profile/bio. Here it is, re-produced in full:

Hello Hurricane
Jon Foreman – vocals/guitar
Tim Foreman – bass
Chad Butler – drums
Jerome Fontamillas – keys/guitar
Drew Shirley – guitar

“Hello Hurricane acknowledges the storms that tear through our lives,” states
Switchfoot singer and songwriter Jon Foreman. “This album is an attempt to respond to
those storms with an element of hope, trying to understand what it means to be hopeful in a world that keeps on spinning.”

With Hello Hurricane, Switchfoot is set to thrive in 2009 with a newfound independence: a new home studio HQ, a new label, and a return-to-roots creativity and
sense of purpose. After ten non-stop years of working as the world’s most humble multimillion selling rock band, the hard-charging North County San Diego-based quintet saw recording sessions for their aptly-titled seventh full-length album as a unique chance to reassess, reflect, and rededicate.

“We built our own studio so we wouldn’t be paying and playing by the hour,”
says Foreman of their self-styled Studio of the Foot home. Beginning in 2007, the band
tracked more than 80 songs and allowed themselves to get lost in the music again and get back to basics. “That’s why we see this album as a new beginning of sorts,” continues Foreman, citing the inspiration that likewise moved bandmate/brother Tim Foreman (bass), Chad Butler (drums), Jerome Fontamillas (keyboards), and Drew Shirley (guitar). "For us it was a feeling of true freedom.”

“The average work day would begin with us meeting on the beach to do some
surfing,” recalls Butler with a smile. “Then we’d head to our studio to write and record. It’s the dream, really.”

Hello Hurricane was recorded by the band and produced by renowned hip hop
bassist and producer Mike Elizondo, known for his work with the likes of Dr. Dre,
Eminem, 50 Cent, Pink, Maroon 5, and Fiona Apple. "I first met Mike through Sean
Watkins (of Nickel Creek) and we had a jam session together in LA,” remembers
Foreman. “We felt like old friends right away.” The result is Hello Hurricane, which
follows the band’s 2006 studio album Oh! Gravity and last year’s era-ending Columbia
Records compilation, The Best Yet.

“It was exciting to work with someone from Mike’s background and to take some
different approaches to rock music,” adds Butler. “He definitely helped us push the
music in some new directions.”

“Absolutely,” nods Foreman in agreement. “We saw a chance to reinvent
ourselves with Mike. Good songs can be played in many different ways and still add up.
For me, that meant tearing things apart a little bit and, as a result, Hello Hurricane has some of the most aggressive tones we’ve ever had when it comes to guitar and drums.”

The album’s driving and urgent “Mess of Me” – with its personal declaration of
independence, as Foreman passionately announces to the world that “I wanna spend the
rest of my life alive!” – powerfully demonstrates the edge behind the new tones. Not
content to settle into a single groove, the band moves from the high flying album opener, “Needle and Haystack Life,” to songs like the stirring “Always Yours” and the sweetly soaring “Your Love is a Song,” which – by its very nature – cries out for many waving hands illuminated by a blue cell phone glow.

The anthemic, riff fueled “This is the Sound,” with its utterly timely generational
themes, finds Foreman spitting, “This is the sound from the discontented mouths of a
haunted nation!” The “Hello Hurricane” title track is even more poignant when it comes
to the band’s perspective on themselves and the world around them. “I’m not talking
about ‘Rock You Like a Hurricane,’” says Foreman with a wink before turning reflective.
“There is a real despair that I see when we travel around the country… and it’s music that people turn to in a time like this. I wanted to reach out to those people with song.”

"For the last decade or so, we’ve been a rock band that really thrives off that
interaction with the crowd,” states Butler. “Our motivation for playing music in the first place was a desire to connect with people in a deeper way.” Out of this connection the band's renowned live show has developed an incredibly loyal following both here in the states and abroad.

Summer ‘09 also found the band proudly hosting the fifth annual Switchfoot Bro-
Am, to benefit local chapters of StandUp For Kids, a national volunteer
outreach nonprofit founded in San Diego. Dedicated to making a difference in the lives
of at-risk and homeless kids, the Bro-Am is highlighted by a surf contest, charity auction, and festival concert featuring sets by Switchfoot and a host of other area artists. “We’re probably the five most fortunate people on the planet to be able to do what we do everyday,” adds drummer Chad Butler. “The Bro-Am really sums up our connection with San Diego, the surfing and music communities coming together to make a
difference.”

* * * * *

Switchfoot got their start in 1996 when the Foreman brothers and Butler came
together around a mutual love of surfing and a passion for rock music spurred by such
personal Southern California guitar heroes as Rocket from the Crypt, Drive like Jehu,
Boilermaker, Three Mile Pilot, and Heavy Vegetable. “Growing up in San Diego, my
heroes were the bands that had sold maybe 30,000 records,” says the elder Foreman. “I’d
never seen U2, so those were the bands that gave me my perspective of what a big rock
show was. There was a feeling of camaraderie in San Diego that afforded us the freedom
in those early days to try anything – even if it meant failing. I don’t think we’d be the band that we are today if we’d started in LA.”

“The San Diego indie rock scene really spawned a lot of inspiration for us" adds
Butler, who remembers – at age 17 – when he was so desperate to see fIREHOSE play an
18+ show at UCSD that he climbed onto a roof to watch the show through a skylight
window. “As a kid I loved going to shows in San Diego. I could not get enough of rock
music. The roof of the building was rattling during every song but the best moment was
when Mike Watt looked up and pointed me out to the audience!”

The band released their debut album, The Legend of Chin in 1997, followed in
1999 by New Way to be Human, an album that marked the band’s debut on the Billboard
“Heatseekers” chart (at #31). From the beginning, the band was a road-ready unit,
building up an increasingly larger fanbase with each subsequent tour. The year 2000 saw
the addition of keyboardist Jerome Fontamillas to the fold and the release of Learning to Breathe, an album that saw Switchfoot taking creative steps forward while earning
eventual RIAA gold in the process.

The album spawned a Grammy nod and a spot on the RIAA platinum soundtrack
to 2000’s A Walk to Remember, as Jon Foreman received the Les Paul Horizon Award for
the Most Promising Up-and-Coming Guitarist. The next year found Switchfoot stepping
out with their Columbia Records debut, A Beautiful Letdown, a Top 20 Billboard 200 hit
that scored double-platinum success on the strength of a pair of gold certified singles, “Meant to Live” and “Dare You to Move.” “When we had success with Beautiful
Letdown, it felt like we were thrust into waters we never dreamed we’d be in and we had
to learn how to swim in,” says a reflective Jon Foreman, shaking his head.

As they navigated these new waters, the band outdid themselves again with the
2005 arrival of their fifth studio album, Nothing is Sound, their first with longtime touring guitarist Drew Shirley. With “Stars,” an RIAA gold certified hit single, the album debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 before rolling to RIAA gold itself. Meanwhile, The Early Years: 1997-2000, a 2004 compilation of the band’s first three albums grabbed another RIAA gold award for Switchfoot.

The band’s widely celebrated sixth studio album, Oh! Gravity, arrived in 2006
with production work from acclaimed producer/mixer Tim Palmer (the Cure, Pearl Jam)
and executive engineer Steve Lillywhite, (U2, the Rolling Stones). Last year’s 18-song
The Best Yet collection included the newly released song, “This is Home” alongside the
band’s biggest and best loved tracks. (The song was also featured in Walt Disney
Studios/Walden Media’s #1 box office theatrical release, The Chronicles of Narnia:
Prince Caspian.) The album’s special Deluxe Edition included a bonus DVD with 14
videos, among them two never-before-seen clips.

In January of 2009, Foreman branched out as part of the side project entity,
Fiction Family, with partner Sean Watkins of Nickel Creek. Their self-titled debut, on
the Dave Matthews co-founded ATO Records, features a dozen songs written by
Foreman and Watkins and recorded by the duo at home studios around San Diego. The
duo performed in dramatic fashion earlier this year at the 2009 Bonnaroo festival in
Tennessee.

As for Hello Hurricane, the members of Switchfoot could not be more motivated
to bring the new music to their grass roots grown fanbase. “I think it is a landmark
record for us,” says Butler, turning serious. “It’s a new chapter in so many aspects of our lives, personally and professionally. I think we’re in the best possible place we’ve been in as a band.”

Switchfoot's single "Mess of Me" Debuts at RADIO? Pre-orders details and stuffs

Here is what I randomly stumbled upon on Twitter:

JadeKing: @switchfoot, 99X in ATL just played "Mess of Me" and they called it "Alive".. Is that what it's going to be called? BTW it sounded great!

^"Mess of Me" is already in the hands of some radio stations? 99X is a Modern Rock/Alternative format station.

This is interesting news, and comes almost an entire month before the impact date. Perhaps Atlantic is already making an effort to woo the key rock stations around the country. I remember hearing (although I'm not entirely certain how true it is), that KROQ, arguably the most influential rock station in the country, had "Mess of Me" under their upcoming releases list. I am not certain. However, early, early plays for a single are always a good sign. We shall see.

--------

Also, here are details about the pre-orders, which obviously have been delayed again, indefinitely:

Switchfoot Twitter:

Hey all, finalizing details for preorders- gonna B up within a week. So amped to get these songs into yours hands! Thanks for your patience

^We'll keep you all posted 'til then!

Switchfoot Pre-Sale delayed once more

By the looks of things, pre-orders for "Hello Hurricane" will have to wait 'til another day once more. Stay tuned, friends. We can wait, right?

Also, LOBH is reporting that it could possibly have been moved to the 28th.

UPDATE (11:14 PM PST) From Jeanna: "Hey guys I just got word from a pretty eliable source that it won't be til the 28th. Sorry!"

^That's ok. We can wait.

UPDATE (11:39 PM PST) That wasn't Jeanna. Wow. Sorry guys...

Some more videos from tour

Before we continue with today's brief video reel-esque update, PLEASE BE SURE to read our friend TJ's first post as a We're Awakening writer. He wrote up a sweet FootColumn about how Atlantic has treated its "pseudo-Christian" artists, and how it relates to one of Atlantic's newest acts, our very own Switchfoot!

READ it. NOW! ;) Great job TJ.

Foot Column: Atlantic Records and “Pseudo-Christian bands” + more info on Hello Hurricane release

Atlantic Records is known for its many mainstream rock and pop acts, such as Metallica, Shinedown, and Jason Mraz. But this record label is also home to a different breed of bands, which includes two “PseudoChristian” groups. Most people know what I’m talking about here. These are bands that reject the “Christian” label, afraid it will lose them listeners, but are still known as “Christian bands”, and/or have a large Christian audience. The two groups that come to mind here are Skillet and Needtobreathe. Skillet is primarily known as a harder rock band, with a sound slightly like that of fellow label-mates Shinedown, and also similar to Three Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin. Needtobreathe is more of a pop/rock group that sometimes even dabbles in a southern gospel sound. Both are very popular with Christian audiences, with Needtobreathe’s single “Washed by the Water” becoming a number one christian hit a couple of years ago. Skillet reaches out to a larger audience, with singles, “Whispers in the Dark” and “Savior” reaching #34 and #26 on the Mainstream Rock charts respectively. Skillet also reaches Christian audiences as well, with their current single “Hero” hitting #32 on the Hot Christian Singles charts. While Needtobreathe regularly uses Word to release their albums (Warner Bros, which owns Atlantic Records, Christian imprint with acts like Remedy Drive)

Skillet stays with Atlantic directly. So essentially Skillet tries to reach out to a larger audience, while Needtobreathe stays with what’s working for them, which is the Christian audience. So what’s the point of all this? Well it’s important because Switchfoot to many, is a “Christian” band. Now whether or not they actually are depends on how you define Christian band; which is a point of discussion for another post and is not really the main point anyways, because, Switchfoot’s goal is to make music for people of all religions. The main point/question here is, “How are these bands treated by Atlantic Records? Are they sidestepped because of the Christian label, or are they appreciated for their musical talent? The answer in the situation would have to be the latter.

While Needtobreathe is mainly marketed to the Christian audience, Skillet continues to reach larger areas despite the fact that they explicitly allude to a higher power in many of their songs (Savior for instance). Skillet also tours with mainstream acts such as Three Days Grace, and is widely known to a large audience. Needtobreathe is clearly also marketed well, with several of their singles doing very well. So what essentially does it mean for Switchfoot? Well, most likely (in fact most certainly) not much. “Hello Hurricane” will certainly be released directly from Atlantic, although there is probably a small chance it will come out on Word as well. Also, Switchfoot will probably be treated very well by Atlantic, as pretty much everyone has seen what this band is capable of (Singles “Dare You to Move” and “Meant to Live”). So essentially, we can count on good reception from Atlantic Records, and know that most likely Switchfoot will be supported as much, if not more than Skillet. In all likelihood then, the fact that many consider Switchfoot to be a “Christian band” should have nothing to do with the way their singles are marketed, since we see that the other pseudo-Christian acts are marketed very well by Atlantic. So don’t expect Switchfoot to be marketed poorly as they may have been in the past, and instead look forward to a great record that should be marketed well, and if the fans call in to radio enough, some great singles.

(Single chart positions taken from Wikipedia)

Note: this post is certainly not meant to say that Switchfoot is only for Christians, because nothing could be farther from the truth. Jon Foreman clearly stated that their music is for everybody, and that they do not consider themselves to be a Christian band.

New Writer

Hi all,

This is TJ, (most of you probably know me from the boards) and I'm gonna be writing with job for we'reawakening now. Obviously, I'm pretty pumped about it, and I'm really honored to be part of the team now. I consider myself to be a pretty big Switchfoot fan, and it's awesome to be writing about them now. I have a foot column coming out soon, and I'd love to answer as many questions as I can. soooooo, if you have any questions about me or my writing (favorite SF song, or any weird or serious question you can think of) just drop a comment and I'll get back to you. I'm really excited about writing about my favorite band, and I hope I can do them justice.....
Thanks!
-TJ

"Mess of Me" radio date pushed back once again?

Before we get to today's updates, I'd like to make a brief shout-out to our new staff writer, TJ, who will be helping us out with updates and so forth. I'll give him a chance to introduce himself personally when he makes his debut on the blog, but he sure didn't hesitate before making a mark.

TJ alerted us that FMQB has reported that "Mess of Me's" long-anticipated radio debut has been delayed once more, this time to September 28-29, 2009.

NOTE: This likely does not affect the fact that we will be getting a copy of the single as an instant download with pre-orders. Stay tuned for more details.

---------

According to LOBH, Jon Foreman says that "Fake Your Own Death" may make it onto "Vice Verses," the album after "Hello Hurricane." That would be something. I'm beginning to think "Vice Verses" is going to be a more introspective record than "Hello Hurricane." But judging that by two song possibilities is stretching things a bit, I do admit.

---------

The Daily Foot has been updated with stories from tour. The Videos we've all already seen, but head on over there anyways, to read up on what's been going on on the Blue October Crazy Making tour.

Interesting Note from the Los Angeles Daily Foot entry:

the day started out with jon and tim cruising up the freeways to a producer's house and working just a touch more on a couple versions of the new songs.

Remember when Jon Foreman tweeted that he was working on the pre-chorus of "Mess of Me?" Well, yes. It's confirmed that they are re-touching a couple of their songs, as we previously speculated.

Should be exciting.

---------

And lastly, Indievision Music has a new mini-review of "Hello Hurricane":

HELLO SWITCHFOOT

Anthemic rock which you might say resembles U2, Muse, or even The Fray in the somber melody department. Hopeful and inspiring lyrical output to rival any of today’s top “Christian” bands. I haven’t really listened to this band much since “The Beautiful Letdown” but I was pleasantly surprised with this new album so much so that I have decided to write this news post about them. What am I talking about? Well I am discussing the new album “Hello Hurricane” by one of today’s leading rock acts out of San Diego, CA……Switchfoot. If you’re looking for that special something to lighten the mood around the holidays this fall, look no further than Switchfoot’s newest release “Hello Hurricane”. Powerful, moving, and utterly fantastic. I may or may not officially review this, I haven’t decided yet. I still have a bit of writer’s block so I may hand this off to a reviewer who really enjoys the upbeat mood of Switchfoot. Let me tell you, some of these songs kick butt in a anthemic and aggressive manner. November 10th couldn’t come soon enough and I know all of you faithful readers are in for a real treat when “Hello Hurricane” drops. Don’t forget that date….November 10th!! Don’t expect a return to the past for this is a band dead set on progression and leading the charge towards a new future. You can find influences from all their albums but this is an entirely new set of tunes created to reach listener at their core. Get ready for the new (and improved) sound of Switchfoot. November 10th!!!!!!! Don’t forget.

"Heading Home" Narnia Demo

Switchfoot released one of their very early demos of the song that eventually became "This Is Home" to the Friends of the Foot recently. The working title was "Heading Home," and the lyrics are as follows:

HEADING HOME

All my life
I knew something was wrong
Love was a mystery
That I felt all along

There's a longing inside me for a dream
There's a longing built deep inside of me

I'm headed home
To a place I've never been on my own
But I'll know it when I get back home
To a place I've always belonged
I'm headed home
I'm headed home

All my life
I knew something was wrong
Love was a mystery
That I felt all along

There's a longing inside of me to believe

^It cuts off abruptly after that line. I would argue that this demo take of the song is much better than the final product. Of course, "This Is Home" was heavily influenced by Disney's writers, which could explain why a clearly superior demo got changed up.

However, this isn't to bag on "This Is Home," as it is still one of the great Switchfoot songs. It's just interesting to hear a new take. If you would like to hear it, check out this cover I put together real quick. (SORRY again for that shameless plug... ~sheepish~)

First mini-review for "Hello Hurricane"

This comes courtesy of JFH:

Early Thoughts...

It's been nearly three years since San Diego rock band Switchfoot have released a brand new studio album. Since the release of the mixed bag that was Oh! Gravity, the guys have been set free from their Columbia Records partnership and have built their own studio with which to record their latest venture, the 12-song effort, Hello Hurricane. With a return to indie status, Switchfoot gets back to their roots in the process, but not without giving their signature sound a fresh treatment. Gone are the hooky radio friendly tracks that were fashioned for releases like The Beautiful Letdown and Nothing Is Sound, as the band stays true to themselves in making songs that sound good and say something of substance (Remember their more subtle debut The Legend Of Chin?). In the process, the sound is kept clean but raw and the guitars cranked to a delicious crunch for tracks like "Mess Of Me," "This Is The Sound," and "Bullet Soul." Those who have been especially feeling the spiritual elements of frontman Jon Foreman's solo ventures will find a lot to love about songs like "Free," which begs our Savior for freedom from ourselves, and the piano-driven "Always," which serves as a genuine worship song. And while Hello Hurricane may not be the band's best project in their 12 year catalog of music, it's shaping up to be a highlight of their already impressive career. Longtime faithful followers of the band since before their mainstream success will especially want to grab this one.

^"may not be the band's best project." We'll see about that one. "Nothing Is Sound" will be hard to beat, but judging by what we've already heard, this isn't going to be just another Switchfoot record. It's going to be special.

Switchfoot talks about new album: Hello Hurricane

Be sure to check out the latest FootColumn about the Atlantic signing and what it could mean for Switchfoot.

----------

TheJeremyConspiracy talked to Switchfoot after a recent show and asked each member what their favorite song was. It's interesting to hear what they said. Also, Jon Foreman talks about the independence of their band. Here's the video:

----------

Oh, here's a couple of new Drewcast videos. Drew is a BEAST in the gym... ;)

----------

And now, here are some videos from a couple of recent shows the Switchfoot boys played:

"The Sound" Rock the Desert

"Mess of Me" Rock the Desert

"This Is Home" Rock the Desert

"Meant to Live" El Paso

----------

Lastly, a shameless plug. hehe... here's a cover video I did for "Yet."

FootColumn: The Atlantic Signing and what it could mean for lowercase people and Switchfoot

Atlantic Records -- the home to many a major rock star today. Many of music's major acts, like Jason Mraz, Carolina Liar, Ryan Cabrera, and Shinedown make their home with Atlantic Records. Also interesting to note is the fact that the "Christian" rock act, Skillet, is also signed on to Atlantic in a deal similar to the one Switchfoot just announced yesterday.

One thing that is important to note right off the bat is that Switchfoot is STILL independent. Sure, they have signed on with Atlantic (which is a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Records), but if the deal is done accordingly, lowercase people records/Switchfoot still own the rights to their own material. The only difference here is that the band has a MAJOR partner on their team, who will now be in charge of working the record and singles to the huge radio and retail outlets that would have otherwise been inaccessible if they had gone truly independent.

This is one thing that I love about how the Switchfoot boys are handling this whole situation. They retain that artistic freedom that an independent band should have. They are also most likely retaining the rights to the songs they write and record. However, they aren't just going to sit back and fall into musical oblivion, releasing songs that will only be sold to the faithful on their website or at their shows. No, they want these songs that they've poured their heart and soul into to be heard all across the globe, while being "respectful to the people that listen to our music." THAT'S our band, right there; they know that what they have in this record is special, and they want anyone and everyone to hear it and share in the experience, as the "musical co-conspirators." We already saw it when Switchfoot wrote "This Is Home" for Disney that they aren't afraid of being major players in the music industry again. They have managed to regain and retain their musical and artistic independence, all while finding the right deal that will present their music (on the business side of things) in a way that THEY, not some record executive, feel has the most integrity.

So, I thought a good step for those who care and are interested in this kind of thing (I know I am), would be to do a quick overview of what Atlantic Records is and what it represents.

An overview of Atlantic Records

Atlantic Records is a label subsidiary of Warner Music Group, which hosts such acts as Mute Math, Linkin Park, Green Day, Taking Back Sunday, Timbaland, Paramore, and The All-American Rejects.

Atlantic distributed by Atlantic Records Group in the U.S. and WEA internationally. It's acts are seeing big-time international success, so it is insured that Atlantic can distribute records globally pretty well. What more can be said? Switchfoot have signed on to one of the elite record labels in the industry, and one that is respected for giving their artists proper representation.

What about Youtube? (since Atlantic is an Warner-owned company)

Funny what the space of seven months will do, but remember back in January when we discussed Warner Music Group's spat with Youtube?? For a refresher, go here.

The basic gist of the story was that Warner had pulled all its videos off of Youtube because Youtube was refusing to pay their asking price in ads and pay-per-clicks. It felt like a sticky mess.

Yet, here we are, seven months later, and Switchfoot has signed up with a Warner-owned record company. Switchfoot, as we know, is on the brink of conducting a robust Youtube campaign surrounding "Hello Hurricane," thanks to Corey Vidal. I do hope that signing with Atlantic/Warner Music Group doesn't derail those plans one bit. It'll be quite a letdown, after all the progress that has been made.

However, I did notice that Warner Music Group did permit the uploading of one of their own artist's official music videos, the Transformers-inspired "New Divide" by Linkin Park (featured below... bonus coverage. haha)

It has since racked up 10 million plus views. Perhaps, Switchfoot and Atlantic worked out a deal where Switchfoot still owns the right to upload their own videos? In fact, I'm pretty sure that's what they did. A truly independent band like Switchfoot or Radiohead is smart enough to make sure they own their own songs and video content; the only difference is that they license their songs to the major labels to distribute, but the labels don't earn the rights to the actual songs themselves. Greatly handled and executed by Switchfoot right there!

What about ATO Records?

ATO Records... long thought to be the distributing partner for lowercase people records is no longer in the equation. It is a bit sad to see them go, but there's no doubt that Atlantic packs a MUCH bigger punch than ATO does. ATO Records does well for the bands like Fiction Family that aren't looking to dominate the worldwide markets, but are rather trying to hit home with the true music listeners who still go out to the record shop to buy a CD.

Switchfoot's messages and music just cry out for a wider audience; the universal themes of hope, love, and tragedy all melded together into an amalgam of sonic goodness should be given to the entire world to hear, if they are willing. This is probably (not positively), the reasoning that went into Switchfoot's decision to sign with Atlantic over ATO Records.

So THAT'S what Jon Foreman meant when he was working with Rob C.?

And one last little tidbit I'd like to talk about (sorry this ran a bit long): remember when Jon Foreman tweeted this on August 5?:

Just got finished working with rob c. rocking up the prechorus of mess o me. Heading to the wiltern with tim now...

^Well, we were all inclined to believe that he was working with producer Rob Cavallo, and now it all makes sense! (begin speculation) Rob Cavallo is a producer for many of Warner Music Group artists' finest works: Green Day's "Dookie" and "American Idiot"; Goo Goo Dolls' "Dizzy Up the Girl"; Paramore's upcoming "brand new eyes"; and Shinedown's "The Sound of Madness." Since Switchfoot just recently signed their deal with Atlantic/Warner Music Group, Jon and Rob were working on a radio edit of "Mess of Me," so they were beefing up the pre-chorus of the song before shipping it off to Atlantic to begin packaging and prepping the singles for consumption at radio! Ah! Epiphanies! (end speculation)

Exciting, exciting times a head, ladies and gents! Hope you're as stoked and amped as I am.

The End. Thanks for reading.

Jon Foreman's new math song?

Jon Foreman decided to translate words from a poem to musical notes using a math formula. This is Jon Foreman experimenting with his poem at Rock the Desert '09

^Thanks to LOBH once again for the tip.

-----------

Atlantic Records is the home to many of today's major acts, like Jason Mraz, Carolina Liar, Ryan Cabrera, Shinedown, and others. In an upcoming FootColumn, we will analyze and discuss what the distribution deal signing with Atlantic will mean for Switchfoot and lowercase people records. It's definitely an exciting time! Stay tuned!

BREAKING: Switchfoot teams with Atlantic Records for Worldwide release of "Hello Hurricane"

From Switchfoot.com:

8.07.09: Greetings from Switchfoot

The past few years have been an incredible journey for us as a band. As we played shows around the world, we thought long and hard about why we play music. We felt like we were up against a bigger storm than we'd ever faced before. It was out of that storm that a newfound hope and freedom began to breath life into our songs. During that time, Jon released four solo EP's and a side project, called Fiction Family. We built our own studio and tracked more than eighty tunes culminating in the completion of our new record, "Hello Hurricane". We recorded the album independently under our own label Lowercase People Records and then began to search for the right partners to help us get these songs out there.

After a few months of deliberating, we're thrilled to announce we've found our team: Switchfoot and Lowercase People Records will be partnering with Atlantic and EMI/CMG for the global release of our new record. These partnerships will ensure that these tunes are heard around the world. More info regarding the release date will be coming shortly. This is an incredible time to be alive- an incredible time to be making music. We're so proud of this record and we can't wait for you to hear it! Thank you for singing along...jon, tim, chad, jerome, drew

New interview with Chad; Support Switchfoot by supporting Shaytard's video; New Drewcast

The Times Features did a news story/interview with Chad Butler. Here it is, reproduced in full, just because it's so awesome.

San Diego based band Switchfoot will be coming to L’Auberge Du Lac Casino to perform on August 13 at Party By The Pool, 7 pm.

Chad Butler, the drummer and one of the founding members of Switchfoot, called me from Seattle to talk about their tour, the band’s new album Hello Hurricane, and charities they are involved in.

“We are so excited to be playing the new songs. We’re trying them out. These shows are a chance for us to get out of the studio. This tour is actually before the record, the record comes out in the fall,” said Butler.

Switchfoot is Jon Foreman, lead vocals and guitar, Tim Foreman, bass, Jerome Fontamillas, Keyboards, guitar and vocals, Drew Shirley, guitar, and Chad Butler, Drums. If you aren’t familiar with their sound, think alternative, jam-band pop, with some funky, grungy mixed in.
The band has a strong presence online and they’re using the podcasts on YouTube to get some of their new music out to fans. If you search Switchfoot’s website you’ll discover the podcast link to YouTube, http://www.youtube.com/user/switchfootpodcast.

“You know this has been the biggest break between albums we’ve ever had so from the bands perspective we’re just itching to get this new stuff out there. We’ve been doing little sneak peaks on our website and YouTube page,” said Chad.

When asked whether or not he had a favorite song from the new record Butler was quick to respond.

“Yeah, there’s a song called “Mess Of Me” that is actually going to be the first single and it’s a song that really took a long time to record. We recorded maybe ten different versions of the song and different arrangements. It felt like a labor of love because it’s something we all believed in and it was a song that meant a lot to us on a heart level so it was worth all the blood, sweat, and tears we put into it. And we’ve been playing it live every night on the tour this summer and it’s gone over really well.”

The band has taken a couple of years to be creative and work on Hello Hurricane. The guys built their own studio in their home town of San Diego. To say they were productive is an understatement. According to Butler, the band recorded eighty songs. Yes, you read that correctly. I had to ask twice to be sure I understood him. Butler laughed as he explained their unbelievable productivity.

“You know as an independent band we had all the time in the world and all the freedom and then all of a sudden the horror becomes how do you define yourself? You’ve got all these different songs and different styles and different musical experimentations. It becomes a big mess, and that was the hard part you know?”

Switchfoot realized it was a challenge to then go through all of those songs, and yet it was an excellent opportunity to have plenty of time and plenty of material to create their record.

“About halfway through recording the record, we looked at each other and said what have we done? It was really fun and the dream was realized and hit this creative stride but then how do you make a statement and how do you define who you are and that’s when it came down to what are the songs saying and which ones mean the most to us?”

Jon Foreman, his bassist brother Tim, and drummer Chad Butler were surfing fanatics when they formed the group in 1996.

“Yeah, well I guess growing up in San Diego surfing is sort of second nature,” said Butler.
“Switchfoot” is a surfing term. It’s basically the switching of the feet on the surf board.

Since the band is so enthusiastic about surfing and giving their talent and time to causes, they have combined the two in the Bro-Am Surf Contest and Concert. The fifth-annual Switchfoot Bro-Am surf contest and concert, which was held at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas on Saturday, June 27, 2009, was created to give back to the San Diego community while also benefiting a local children’s charity.

This year’s event benefited San Diego’s StandUp For Kids.

“The whole Bro Am event benefits homeless kids in our hometown, San Diego, and it’s an incredible organization called “StandUp for kids” and it’s now actually nationwide but it was started in San Diego so it’s something that’s close to our hearts and our home.

The surf contest and benefit concert on the beach is all to raise awareness for that organization and we’ve been doing it for five years and it’s our favorite day of the year,” said Chad.

The band also finds time for several other organizations and charities like: Habitat For Humanity, To Write Love On Her Arms, and helping out their idols U2 with AIDS-in-Africa.

“We try to make a difference in local communities—something bigger than just rock n roll. We are really inspired by the people that come to our shows because they have really educated us on what they’re doing.

And people who are getting involved in their own backyards and building a house for Habitat for Humanity and To Write Love On Her Arms—helping kids that are dealing with depression, and suicide and things of that nature—I think those are real causes that don’t get enough support so we are definitely trying to spread the word.”

Since forming in 1996, Switchfoot has been rewarded and recognized for their Christian faith through their music. The band has headlined religious-music festivals, and scored a 2001 Grammy nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album of the Year, plus several Gospel Music Awards (GMA Dove awards) and ASCAP Awards.

Chad Butler is quick to say that they have never labeled themselves as a Christian band. He was very adamant to tell me that while they are Christians, they are so by choice and that their music is a separate entity.

“We’ve always just called ourselves “rock band” and we are Christian by faith and not by genre. I am a believer and as a believer your faith is going to be reflected in your art, and it is exciting when you look out at our audience and see all different kinds of people with all different ethnicities, and religious backgrounds and I think we make music for thinking people and I appreciate the support of anyone who has an open mind and connects with the music.”

Switchfoot has certainly moved beyond the label and boxing in that one might experience if you called yourself strictly a Christian band. It’s not too often that Christian groups are able to have solid crossover success with their material. Except for bands like Jars of Clay, P.O.D., and Creed, the labeling can sometimes box an artist into a particular category.

Not so with Switchfoot. They have had the good fortune to be on some successful Soundtracks. The Spiderman 2 CD, Import version only, contains their song “Meant To Live”. Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian boasts their song “This is Home”. ‘Four of their songs are on A Walk to Remember, the '02 Mandy Moore film.

“Well, it’s definitely an honor when someone from films or the visual art forms find a meaning or a placement for your music. To see your song in someone else’s art it’s an honor you know to have a director call and say hey I really like this song and I think it would fit well with what I’m trying to do in a movie—you know that’s a huge honor,” said Butler.

Recently, the band covered Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” and if you haven’t seen it, you should go online and check it out. It seems there is no putting this band into any kind of box when you watch the Beyonce cover. Chad laughed at the mention of the Beyonce cover. The band had fun covering the song.

“You know it’s funny, we pick our own songs very seriously, but we don’t take ourselves very seriously and I think if you watch enough of our podcast clips on YouTube you’ll figure that out very quickly. We’ve been covering that song this summer too.”

On the cusp of the release of their new album, Butler is introspective about their music and the up coming record Hello Hurricane.

“We are the same guys with the same goal of making the music we believe in. We’ve been doing this for over ten years now and that’s really what keeps us going. Really, what defines this new album is picking songs that we felt like had a hope. Because you turn on the TV this day and age and hope is hard to come by.”

On August 13 at L’Auberge’s Party By The Pool, Switchfoot will be playing the old favorites and their new, hopeful songs from the up-and-coming record Hello Hurricane, to be released in October.

“For me growing up, I looked to art and music when times were tough and I think there is a theme on this record of facing the storm head-on,” said Chad Butler.

Everyone around Lake Charles and the surrounding area certainly knows what it’s like to look into the eye of a hurricane. Switchfoot’s Hello Hurricane will be a welcoming storm.

FootColumn: "The Sound" or "Mess of Me"? Switchfoot deciding on lead single.

Well, this sort of counts as a FootColumn, although it is also a bit of a news post. Up to you to decide. ;)

Following on the heels of news that "Hello Hurricane" has been pushed back to early November, we have received word that the lead single is now somewhat undecided. Jeanna from LOBH says that she has been in contact with Jon Foreman and Tim Foreman, who seem to be saying that "Mess of Me" and "The Sound" are the two singles currently in contention.

When Tim and I talked about the this subject a few days ago, he said they were thinking of The Sound as the second single but nothing was concrete yet. Then yesterday, Jon said that they were going between The Sound and Mess of Me, but it was PROBABLY going to be Mess of Me

(SOURCE)

This complicates things, slightly. Switchfoot.com has an updated splash page, based on all the new information Tim gave us in his official message boards post. However, it still does say "Mess of Me" will be the lead single.

In the end, "Mess of Me" will probably win out as the lead single anyways, since it's already been decided in advance. "The Sound" would make an excellent second single, as it has the ability to really capture the rock crowd with its Radiohead-esque opening riff and fist-pumping chorus.

My question is whether the impact radio date for "Mess of Me" will be pushed back because of this, and whether or not it will affect distribution of the single to radio stations. As of right now, "Mess of Me" is scheduled to go to radio on August 5th, which is tomorrow, with rumors that pre-orders for "Hello Hurricane" begin August 7th, but none of that is concrete or certain at this point.

Also, Tim mentioned that they are still looking at several different record distribution companies to get the album out to as large a platform as possible, so they're probably choosing very carefully what to do with that.

So, thoughts?

Switchfoot things happening today in San Diego

Andy Barron tweeted today saying that he is:

sending the proofs of the new @switchfoot deluxe record back to the printers. pretty exciting. http://twitpic.com/crgob

Share photos on twitter with Twitpic

Next, Corey Vidal, Switchfoot's Youtube manager, is also down in San Diego for the next few days and "is on my way to @switchfoot's recording studio to jam and shoot some YouTube videos. Rock on!" (via Twitter)

^Looks like the Switchfoot boys are making the most of this break between Crazy Making Tour stops to get some things done. Tomorrow, the tour resumes at the Wiltern in Los Angeles. Word on the street is something big is happening at that show, but we'll see, I suppose.

--------

Stay tuned for the latest FootColumn, probably coming later on today. It will feature some thoughts on the release date being pushed back, as well as the whole lead singles saga.

New Jon Foreman song, "Fake Your Own Death"

From Cesar Chavez Park in downtown San Jose on August 1, thanks to Ibanezrg120gtr.

^and the Jon Foreman obsession with his new little friend continues. haha. See August 1 tweet:

Ibanezrg120gtr also has a video of "The Sound" from that San Jose show. Jon is using two mics during it. Epic. What isn't quite so epic is the shortening of the song, probably due to the fact that Switchfoot's set is squeezed into 45 minutes. But they still rock it pretty hard:

And, a video of a song called "Aint No Drug"(??) Oh, Jon... haha.
