Switchfoot Contributes for Grads; Drew Shirley is interviewed; Jon Foreman to play another festival

Yes, very long post title.... Anyways... here's today's news!

Several popular artists, including Switchfoot, tobyMac, Relient K, Flyleaf, Leeland, Family Force 5, Stellar Kart and others, participated in the creation of “iM4u,” a CD/DVD gift book for the “YouTube” generation ($12.95).

The music gift book is for graduating seniors and aims to keep young people connected to their faith once they leave home. The artists bring songs and video counsel dealing with key issues of this major life transition: the future, success, friends and personal faith.

Drew Shirley was interviewed on PjStar.

I notice that fans are quite active on the message boards of your Web site. Are you actually reading the threads from your fans?

Yeah, for sure. I'm reading the threads, and I come in like a stealth bomber, but I don't post a lot. But I do get in there and read it and check out what's going on.

Let's talk about your current tour, which is promoting the not-for-profit organization To Write Love on her Arms. What made you get involved with this cause?

It's an amazing, amazing cause. They basically deal with people - mostly young people - that are involved in depression, and maybe even suicide or cutting. Our friend Jamie (Tworkowski) started it a few years ago. Our history with him goes way back. We've always felt strongly about his cause but never have been able to do a tour alongside him. He got an amazing response from people on MySpace and the Warped Tour and everything and had no idea how widespread this issue was and how many people basically thought they were alone. What we want to do is bring hope wherever we can, whether it be with Habitat for Humanity, like our last tour, or Write Love on Her Arms, here. The message of hope is the same.

Your band has done a lot of work for charity. Is there any certain cause that stands out to you personally?

Well, if I can be candid with you, it's handicapped kids. My younger brother has Down syndrome, so I've always had a sensitivity to handicapped kids.

Have you ever gotten to meet or play with any musicians that you were star-struck by?

Yeah, for sure. We did this thing one time and there were all these guitar players at it, at the Gibson Amphitheatre. I'm standing backstage alongside Slash from Guns 'N Roses, Robben Ford, a phenomenal jazz/blues musician, Steve Lukather, who played on Michael Jackson albums and was in Toto. I'm just, like, "What am I doing here? I'm just a kid." But it was fun we got to play with all those guys. I met Dean (DeLeo) from Stone Temple Pilots, and they're a great influence on me. We might play a show with them actually, this summer.
